Church and Oswaldtwistle Partial Census 1841

1841 census data

This data has been transcribed from the Oswaldtwistle and Church Census for 1841 which can be found on PRO reference HO 107/509 and HO 107/107 respectively. This data is Crown Copyright.

The entries for Church contain only references to the HAWORTH surname, but the Oswaldtwistle entries should contain all references to the following surnames: ALMOND, BOLTON, BRADLEY, BROWN, CHADWICK, CRANKSHAW, CRANSHAW, CRAWSHAW, CRONSHAW, GORTON, HARGREAVES, HEARGREAVES, HAWORTH, HEYWORTH, HOWARTH, HOWORTH, LORD, SIDDLE, SUART, SUDALL, SUDELL, TATTERSALL, THORNBOROUGH, WALCH, WALSH, and WOOD. But of course I may have missed a few!

There are also odd references to many others, including:.

ASHWORTH, ASPDEN, ASPIN, BAILEY, BARKER, BENTLEY, BRADSHAW, BRIGGS, BRINDLE, BROADLEY, CHAMBERS, CUNLIFFE, DAVISON, DEARDEN, DUCKWORTH, ENTWISTLE, GARDEN, GARTELL, GASH, GASTALL, GIBSON, GOOD, GORDON, GORGSON, GREENWOOD, GRIMSHAW, HEAP, HEATSTEAD, HINDLE, HIRKIE, HOLDEN, HOLDING, HOLT, KERSHAW, LANGDON, LIGHTBOWN, MITCHELL, MULLINGS, NUSHALL, NUTTAL, NUTTALL, PEARSON, PICKLES, PICKUP, POLLET, SHARPLES, SIMPSON, STEPHENSON, TAYLOR, TOWNLEY, TRICKETT, WADE, WALMSLEY, WESTALL, WESTELL, WHITTAKER, YATES, YOUNG.

There was less data available for the 1841 Census; birthplace, relationship to head of household and marital status was NOT collected.

Age is a tricky one; apparently anyone over 20 was supposed to have their age rounded to the nearest 5 years - so there are apparently lots of twins! However, this did not always happen - it depended on the ennumerator; some rounded it up, some rounded it down and some didn't do any rounding at all!

The only detail regarding birthplace was whether the person was born in Lancashire. If they weren't then it was only noted if they were born in Wales, Scotland or Ireland; other English counties were not mentioned. I would treat the birth county information with a little suspicion as I know that for one of my ancestors it is wrong. Sometimes the question may not have been "Where were you born?" but "Where do you come from?" which can lead to an incorrect answer. As I was transcribing the last of this data in a great hurry I must admit to having missed out on whether the county information was there. Sorry.

Parts of this film were illegible and so you may see the odd ? or "illeg" when I couldn't read it properly. There were also times when I failed to get an address. Some Christian names were a bit 'iffy' so I have had a try then indicated the sex afterwards.
